Which Countries Accept IELTS vs PTE?
This is the most critical factor for Pakistani students. Your destination country should determine which test you take — not which one seems "easier."
Module-by-Module: Which is Easier?
The honest answer is that neither test is universally easier. Each module favours different types of students. Here is how they compare section by section.
🗣️ Speaking — The Biggest Difference
Face-to-face with examiner
Marked by a trained human examiner in person or via video call. Assessed on fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Natural conversation — you can ask for clarification.
AI-scored microphone test
You speak into a microphone with other test-takers in the room. 100% AI-scored. Grammar errors do not directly reduce your Speaking marks — fluency and pronunciation dominate.
Verdict — Depends on Your Personality
If you are nervous speaking to strangers, PTE's AI scoring removes that pressure. If you find computers unnatural and prefer real conversation, IELTS is better. Note: many students report PTE Speaking is harder than expected because the AI has no flexibility — mispronouncing a word costs marks immediately.
✍️ Writing — IELTS Has a Clearer Structure
Task 1 + Task 2 essay
Task 1: describe a graph or chart (Academic) or write a letter (General). Task 2: an opinion or discussion essay of 250+ words. Clear, separate tasks — students know exactly what to prepare for.
Summarize + Essay (integrated)
Writing and Speaking sections are combined in PTE. Tasks include Summarize Written Text and an essay. PTE has many more short, varied task types that feel less predictable than IELTS.
Verdict — IELTS is Easier for Most Pakistani Students
IELTS Writing has a clear, predictable structure that is easier to prepare for systematically. PTE has many more task types across integrated sections, which many students find harder to manage under time pressure.
🎧 Listening — PTE Has an Edge
Multiple accents, one playback
40 questions across 4 sections. British, Australian, American, and Canadian accents. Audio plays once only — no replay. Spelling errors cost marks directly.
Predictable task types
Includes Write from Dictation — a high-scoring, very trainable task. PTE Listening tasks are more structured and predictable. Strong scorers on dictation tasks can significantly boost their Listening band.
Verdict — PTE Listening is Easier to Score High
The Write from Dictation task in PTE is highly trainable and carries significant scoring weight. Students who practise it consistently can reliably score high in PTE Listening. IELTS Listening is harder to predict because of varied accent exposure and spelling sensitivity.
📖 Reading — Roughly Equal, Different Challenge
3 long passages, 60 minutes
40 questions across three long texts. True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings are famously tricky. Requires fast reading — 20 minutes per passage. Good for strong, fast readers.
Shorter texts, more task types
Many shorter passages with varied task types including Re-order Paragraphs and Fill in the Blanks. Grammar strength is rewarded. Less time pressure per individual passage.
Verdict — Depends on Your Reading Style
Fast readers with strong comprehension do better in IELTS. Students with strong grammar and vocabulary who prefer shorter, varied tasks may find PTE Reading more manageable. Neither is clearly easier.
